Whispering Waldo

The character is a white faced clown based on the Artwork of Dame Laura Knight (1877 - 1970) who painted travellers and Romani people including marginalised communities such as circus people.  The character is a study of how people with mental health issues often hide behind a mask on a daily basis.  The  design is influenced by Gerard Vicaire's (1927 - 2018) creations for the classic sure footed and elegant white faced clown such as Jackie Sloan of Bertram Mills and Chippenfield circus fame c. 1950's.  The original designs from the French designer include for 'le sac', a one piece costume with hand embroidered sequins forming different pictures and emblems.  My design included a jacket and trouser for ease of fit with a harlequin type fabric placement to arrest the eye and draw interest to the character.
